A new type of multi-band gravitational wave sources produced in galaxy centers

报告摘要

Supermassive black hole can capture a stellar-mass black hole and form a system called “extreme-mass-ratio inspiral” (EMRI). Such a system emits gravitational waves which contain rich information about the spacetime in the close vicinity of the supermassive black hole, and hence is one of the most important targets of the future space-borne gravitational-wave detectors. Recently, we discovered, by studying astrophysical dynamics, that binary stellar-mass black holes can also be captured by supermassive black holes. The capture leads to the formation of a “binary extreme-mass-ratio inspiral” (b-EMRI). Unlike many other gravitational-wave sources, each b-EMRI is essential a three-body system, containing two pairs of binaries, and hence emits gravitational waves in two different frequencies. This is a new multi-band gravitational-wave source. In this talk, I will cover the relativistic dynamical evolution, emitted waveform, and detection scheme for b-EMRIs, as well as the related new science cases for the future joint observations of gravitational waves using both ground- and space-based detectors.

Dr. Xian Chen got his Ph.D from Peking University. He had received support from the China Scholarship Council to study in the University of California, Santa Cruz for two years. After graduation, he worded as a postdoc in the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics in China, Max-Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Germany, and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. He is now an assistant professor in the Astronomy Department of the School of Physics, Peking University.

His research interest is in the dynamical processes close to black holes, and the related electro-magnetic and gravitational radiations, including the electro-magnetic counterparts to supermassive black hole binaries, the gas and stellar dynamics in the Galactic Center, and the astrophysical objects that emit both milli- and hundred-Hertz gravitational waves.
