Professor at Wuhan University, Xing-Zhong Zhao directs the Laboratory of Smart Materials & Devices. Now his research interests are mainly about Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells(DSSCs), Microfluidic Systems & Nanostructure Devices and Pizeoelectric materials. Author of more than one hundrend peer-reviewed publications and inventor of more than ten patents.

He received B.S. degree in Wuhan University in 1982, M.S. degree in Wuhan University supervised by Prof.Ren-Hui Wang in 1985, doctor degree in Beijing University of Science and Technology under Prof.Jun Ke's direction in 1989. As postdoctor researcher at Materials Research Institute in Pennsylvania State University in USA, supervised by National Academy of Engineering members Prof.Rustum Roy and Prof.L.E.Cross.

He has been awarded Special Grant for Expedite Research(SGER) by NSF in USA due to his excellent works in hydrothermal synthesis method. He was financially supported by 'Century Talents Training Program' which is funded by the Ministry of Education, China in 1999. In 2001, he was awarded by 'Outstanding Youth Fund' financial support. In 2002 , he was selected as 'Cheung Kong Professor’ by the Ministry of Education, China. In 2003, he was selected as a national member of 'New Century Talents Program'.
